Sedona Alternative Healing Arts Newsletter
Fall 2007
Stress Management With Hypnotherapy
This fall newsletter will hopefully expand your
world about the deadly effects that stress has on our lives. In
October 2006, my twin sister, at the age of 57 years, lost her
battle to lifelong stress resulting in fatal cardiovascular disease.
Heart disease has taken the lives of my mother (at age 67), her
sister, my aunt (age 44), and most recently, my mother’s
only living sister, my aunt (age 86). All of these women were
smokers, rarely exercised, ate too many saturated fats and had
a number of life stressors working against them. So I’m
thinking that maybe part of my job on this earth plane is to educate
others (and myself) about the importance of making therapeutic
lifestyle changes. I know when I’m feeling stressed, my
body has more aches and pains, my emotions are more sensitive,
and I begin to feel exhausted by the slightest exertion. And I
begin eating and drinking stuff I know I shouldn’t.
It’s a time for healing, not only ourselves
but also our planet.
I like to think (and feel) that when we take
more responsibility for being happier and healthier individuals,
then an added benefit will be that Mother Earth and mankind will
thrive in peace and harmony. Many would call me “the eternal
optimist” and I have no objection to that! I have been called
to do my part right here in the vortex healing energies of Sedona,
Arizona for a very good reason!
My own need for a healing retreat.
I came here in 1999 thinking that I needed a
break from the chaos of the San Francisco Bay Area. I needed my
own healing retreat more than I ever realized! My focus was spirituality
and healing, utilizing my own version of the “alternative
therapies” – spiritual hypnosis.

*excluding past life regression
Enter into a powerful world of deep relaxation
and inner healing.
My experience of being a hypnotherapist for nearly
10 years has given me an extraordinary opportunity to see first
hand how using stress management with hypnotherapy improves every
area of one’s life: physically, mentally, emotionally and
spiritually. It is truly healing for your soul to have easy access
to natural relaxation through self-hypnosis. Those who have come
to me for stress management hypnotherapy sessions are astounded
at how easy it is for them to drop down into what I call, the
theta brain wave state, which is exactly the same relaxed, natural
state we are in before we drift off to sleep at night. When we
can quiet our physical body and our minds (through practicing
relaxation techniques), then we can enter into a powerful world
of the deepest relaxation and inner healing we have ever encountered.

What hypnosis is and is NOT
Since 1958 the American Medical Association (AMA)
has accepted and promoted hypnosis as a natural way to relax,
a way of accepting suggestions and as a motivational impetus that
helps you to want to make changes in your life. (Read my Hypnotherapy
page!) One of my biggest jobs is reducing fears about what hypnosis
is and isn’t. Despite popular beliefs, you will NOT act
like a chicken or a duck or any other goofy thing for that matter.
YOU ARE ALWAYS IN CONTROL AND YOU WILL NEVER DO ANYTHING YOU DON’T
WANT TO DO—EVER!! Hypnosis is NOT a sleep state; it’s
a deep, relaxing trance state, similar to daydreaming, only more
focused on you learning a new, healthy, powerful way of thinking
or behaving. It’s safe, smooth and easy and just about anyone
can be hypnotized if they are motivated to be. (Only those who
have a very low IQ or have diagnosed psychoses are not good candidates
for hypnosis.) Our conscious minds are always trying to control
and protect us—it is the ego’s job to do that really!
So then my job is to help you relax enough so you can go more
deeply—down into the subconscious level of your mind where
new beliefs and behaviors can be suggested. And then any suggestions
that are positive and helpful to you will be given by ME! Sounds
pretty simple, doesn’t it? And it is—a whole lot simpler
than you have ever imagined (that’s what my clients tell
me too!!). Read on and then if you want to get really serious

What is Stress?
So let the STRESS MANAGEMENT WITH HYPNOTHERAPY BEGIN with some background on what stress is and the dangerous problems
it creates.
Did you know that…
- Stress accounts for 75 – 90% of all primary care
visits in the U.S.?
(National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health)
- Almost all illness is stress-related
-- Caused by stress
-- Aggravated by stress
-- Causes stress
Stress is the #1 reason why people eat poorly and quit
healthy lifestyle programs.
We hear and read
a lot about Stress, but what is Stress? Stress is a physiologic
response to a demand for change. When we are feeling stressed,
we are generally trying to do too many things to be able to do
them all well enough.
Hans Selye, M.D., Ph.D.
talks about the 3 Stages of Stress that he calls General Adaptation
Syndrome.
The Arousal Stage:
- Rapid increases in catecolamines (alarm molecules)
- Slower increases of corticosteroids (stress steroids)
Adaptation:
- Characterized by sustained increased levels of corticosteroids
and alarm molecules
- Altered glucose tolerance, blood pressure, thyroid hormone and
sex
hormone metabolism
Exhaustion
- Degenerative diseases characterized by the adverse influence
of corticosteroids and alarm molecules
The long term effects of Elevated Cortisol and Catecolamines
affects the Sympathetic Nervous System, a condition called Sympathetic
Dominance:
- GI distress: IBS, ulcers
- Cardiovascular symptoms: rapid pulse, pounding heart, weakness,
dizziness, chest pain, high blood pressure
- Mood changes: general irritability, floating anxiety, depression,
impulsive behavior, nervous laughter, increase startle response
- Hyper-kinesis or –excitation
- Sleep disturbances: nightmares, insomnia
- Cognitive impairment: inability to concentrate, poor memory
- Neuromusculoskeletal complaints: TMJ, bruxism, trembling,
nervous ticks, back and muscle ache
- Energy level: fatigue of unknown origin
- Adrenal architecture changes: Adrenal hyperplasia “burnout”:
dryness of mouth, sweating, salt craving
- Immune impairment: increased susceptibility to viral infections,
autoimmune disorders
As you can see even over a brief period of time we suffer the
effects of too much stress in our lives. The long term effects
are even more devastating.
We can learn to recognize the signs of physical and mental
stress. (Here we also need to differentiate between transient
versus chronic conditions. Always contact your doctor if you
are concerned about your health.)

Your Path to Healing
Your path to healing may include several choices to help you
manage stress naturally. Developing healthier eating habits
and improving diet are great places to start. Exercise gives
us so many benefits while also reducing stress. Changing our
thinking to alter the perception of what is stressful to us
allows for healthier, happier attitudes. Vitamin and mineral
supplements can also enhance feelings of well-being and support
good health.
Stress management with hypnotherapy will change your life for
the better…forever!!

As one of my stress management clients said recently,
“Thank
you Susan for sharing your beautiful spirit and healing abilities
with me. I’m so glad I found you when I did. THE JOY IN
MY LIFE HAS SKYROCKETED!”
